I’ve been scrambling to keep up with all the news and updates for you all, but on Thursday the Illinois senate voted 44 to 6 to approve a bill that grants medical cannabis to opioid-addiction patients. With doctor’s approval, patients will receive a medical cannabis card that’s good for one year. This is big people!

The definition of an opioid is an opiumlike compound that binds to one or more of the three opioid receptors of the body, producing morphine-like effects to treat pain. People are prescribed opioid medication for their ailment, but end up becoming addicted, sometimes fatally. According to drugabuse.gov, in the 1990’s pharmaceutical companies wrongfully endorsed opioids as non-addictive. This led to abuse of the drug and of course, over-prescribing. Now, opioid overdose is one of the leading killers in America, 45,000 just last year to be exact.

Every day, more than 115 people in the United States die after overdosing on opioids. The misuse of and addiction to opioids—including prescription pain relievers, heroin, and synthetic opioids such as fentanyl—is a serious national crisis that affects public health as well as social and economic welfare. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that the total “economic burden” of prescription opioid misuse alone in the United States is $78.5 billion a year, including the costs of healthcare, lost productivity, addiction treatment, and criminal justice involvement.  -drugabuse.gov

Sure, cannabis treatment isn’t everyone’s choice, but at least the stuff won’t kill you. Advocates for cannabis, like Dr. Sonjay Gupta, agrees that treatment works in three ways:

  1. Cannabis safely and effectively replaces opioids as pain treatment.
  2. Cannabis relieves the symptoms from opioid withdrawl, i.e. vomiting and insomnia.
  3. Cannabis can help repair neurotransmitters damaged by opioid use.

As different states continue to fight to include more cannabis legalization, big wins like this definitely help the push. Advocate, your voices matter! Opposing parties and some conservative leaders still feel cannabis is a gateway drug with little health benefits.

But we know better!

Enjoy this beautiful day blogees!
